We have been in the house for 11 years. Some things were renovated before we arrived, although the actual floor plan remains unchanged?an Ashen & Allen SM-101(A).
Some of the previous owner?s work had to be undone. Three layers of flowered wallpaper required a lot of elbow grease to remove and already carpeted areas needed to be replaced.
Our own updates touched on the kitchen, master bedroom & bath, and the secondary bedrooms. Tile and hardwood were added. Additionally, a full floor-to-ceiling wall dividing the family room from the dining room was cut to half-height to open the space to more conversation. In the master bathroom, a glass block wall was installed to allow more light while retaining privacy.
Outside, slate was laid in the atrium and a rotted deck in the back replaced. New landscaping followed.
Our house is now colorful and lively, reflecting our family?s active lifestyle. It has the open feel of an Eichler but everywhere you are surrounded by color?in the furniture, on the walls, and in the decorative elements.
The changes have been done with lots of family input (and hard work) between ourselves and our 2 children.
Things we are thinking about for the future include: expanding the master bedroom, enclosing the courtyard as a kids? activity area, remodeling the kitchen, and updating the sliding glass doors for functionality and energy efficiency.
