Our house was built in August of 1960 and had 4 previous owners.
We moved into our home in 1999 and began a renovation that continues to this day. With the exception of exterior paint and re-laminated kitchen counters, the home was in its original state when we purchased it.
First, we put green slate and commercial grade carpet throughout, followed by a rigid foam roof and ceiling fans. With the downturn in the valley, my wife went to work and I became a stay-at-home dad. With 2 boys under 4 years of age hanging on each leg, I became architect, general contractor, and sometime sub-contractor.
Thus began the major portion of the remodel:
? Both Bathrooms
? Kitchen
? Landscaping front and back yards (in 2000 and again in 2006)
? Atrium
? Garage conversion to home office / play room
? Sideyard storage
? Tree fort / play house
It?s been interesting. With 2 children, a dog, and both of us working out of the house, we definitely use every inch of our home and property on a daily basis.
I think our best decision was to keep the original kitchen footprint and not expand into the family room.
Our worst decisions were probably those made in our first attempt at landscaping, which did not enhance the architecture of the home. Thus the second attempt.
Our future remodel plans include an outdoor fireplace and pool with hot tub.
