Built in 1960, our home is an Anshen & Allen design with central atrium (model SM-101A). In 1980, a former architect/owner transformed it into a 2-storey home?creating a spacious 2,700 square foot, 5 bedroom property.
His modifications closely followed the Eichler style, providing a seamless extension that has a light and contemporary feel. Close attention was paid to design details that mirrored the original structure, such as exposed roof beams, tongue-and-groove ceilings, strategically placed skylights, and grooved external siding. With the opposing slopes of the new roofs over the enlarged living space and upper floor, the effect from outside is that of a purposely built two-story Eichler.
Extensive use of windows on all four sides of the former atrium allows a significant amount of light into the living space thus retaining the signature ?atrium feel?.
We moved into our home 18 months ago and have made additional radical modifications to the downstairs.
Internal walls were removed, 1500 square feet of 24? gray slate flooring laid, and a new kitchen with granite tops and stainless steel fittings installed to create a very contemporary living space. Careful use of drywall on some surfaces whilst retaining original wood paneling on others has helped lighten the whole living space. The drywall was also used to clad new room beams which, together with removal of some side and overhead windows, enabled the modifications to be incorporated so that they appear to be part of the original structure.
The next phase of re-modeling will start next spring with the conversion of a ground floor bedroom into a master en-suite bathroom.
