Built about 1961, previous owners had made numerous changes to the house over the years. Carpet had been installed in some rooms, the mahogany and ceilings painted white, and the original kitchen replaced. We moved into our Eichler in 1998.
I had never heard of Eichlers until we bought this house, but my spouse had. We both liked it because it reminded us of Scandinavian design (we are from Denmark and Norway). The walls of glass and indoor/outdoor living held definite appeal.
Before we moved in, we replaced some of the carpet and removed what remained of the original linoleum tiles.
Marble was installed through the kitchen, hallway, and guest bathroom. We then repainted the rooms, using a
colorful palette: burgundy in the kitchen; lime green in the living room; mustard, blue, and yellow in the bedrooms.
After we moved in, we continued to make changes?some due to necessity, some due to opportunity, some plain old creativity!
Necessity took a hand when a water leak in the bathroom caused extensive dry rot and all but the tub was replaced.
An opportunity arose 5 years ago in the form of thick shelves of glass from a neighbor?s corporate office move.
These were re-cut and hung throughout the house using airplane wire. We like to think creativity is apparent throughout the house, but particularly in the outdoor spaces: the handmade fountain, our table of copper tubing and slate, and the planter that doubles as a patio umbrella stand.
Future projects include installing one continuous flooring throughout the home?possibly linoleum tile.
